First Shipment by Mechanical Refrigerated Car
On August 22, the first ever shipment of refrigerated fruits and vegetables was launched on the Addis Ababa-Djibouti railway. The first container loaded with avocado fruit was lifted from Ethiopia’s Modjo Dry port to be transported to European Market via the railway on Saturday. The launch of the cold chain services facilitates the export of Ethiopian fresh agricultural products to Djibouti and beyond, as well as the export of seafood from Djibouti to landlocked Ethiopia.
Minister of the Transport Ministry, Dagmawit Moges said the trial operation is an important step in utilizing the cool logistics corridor development for the export of fruit and vegetables from Ethiopia. She noted that the move will encourage Ethiopian farmers engaged in fruit and vegetable production to directly make their way into the global market, promoting the export of Ethiopian agricultural products and foreign exchange earnings from agriculture.
