The groundbreaking ceremony for Colombia's Western Tramway Project, constructed by CRCC, was held on June 17. This marks the first large-scale infrastructure project launched in Colombia since it joined the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI).
The project will feature 39.66 kilometers of dual-track electrified railway, 17 stations, 10 bridges, and one major vehicle depot. The system will link Colombia's capital Bogotá with four cities in the Cundinamarca Province, establishing the country's first tram line connecting the capital to its satellite cities.
The project leverages China's industrial strengths while meeting international standards, aiming to deliver a comprehensive transportation solution tailored to Latin America's urban transit needs and passenger comfort requirements. As Colombia's capital and largest city, Bogotá ranks among Latin America's fastest-growing metropolitan areas. For years, workers living in surrounding areas but employed in Bogotá have endured lengthy commutes, with many only managing to return home on weekends. Once operational, the tram system will cut daily commuting time to just 30-40 minutes for residents along the route.
This infrastructure project embodies Colombia's development aspirations and addresses genuine public needs, demonstrating the strong partnership between China and Colombia in pursuing shared prosperity. It represents a tangible example of high-quality BRI cooperation, particularly in expanding traditional infrastructure partnerships. Upon completion, the project will substantially improve regional connectivity, optimize industrial development along the corridor, and promote more sustainable, intelligent, and efficient transportation options, providing fresh impetus for Colombia's balanced and sustainable national development strategy.
