A groundbreaking ceremony was held on July 15 in Algiers for the extension of the capital's Metro Line 1, which marks the first subway project undertaken by a Chinese company serving as the general contractor in Algeria.
The 9.575-kilometer extension will feature nine underground stations linking downtown El Harrouch with Houari Boumediene International Airport. Algeria's metro company owns the project, which will be delivered by a joint venture between CRCC and local state enterprises. The scope encompasses system integration, escalator installation, station finishing work, and track construction.
The extension represents a cornerstone of the Algerian government's urban transport infrastructure strategy, designed to ease commuter challenges across the capital. By connecting major residential districts, the university campus, business hubs, and the airport, the line addresses surging public transport demand. The project promises to reduce mounting traffic congestion while enhancing quality of life for residents. Once operational, it will provide seamless access between Algiers' city center and its international gateway, establishing a vital transport corridor for future urban mobility.
This venture deepens CRCC's involvement in Algeria's urban development and infrastructure modernization. The project will showcase Chinese expertise internationally while strengthening bilateral cooperation in construction technology and knowledge sharing, highlighting the company's proven capabilities in metro development.
