CRCC has secured a major contract to supply steel rails for Morocco's Kenitra-Marrakech high-speed railway, marking the first export of Chinese high-speed rail steel to Africa.
Morocco operates Africa's first modern high-speed rail line. The initial phase, built using French technology and standards, spans 200 kilometers and began operations in 2018. As Morocco prepares to host the 2030 FIFA World Cup, the country has launched the second phase - extending the line from Kenitra to Marrakech. The project requires 60,000 tons of European-standard R260Mn steel rails, measuring 36 meters in length and conforming to the 60E1 specification.
CRCC has been expanding its presence across North African markets, including Morocco and Algeria, to strengthen international partnerships. For this rail contract, the company conducted thorough advance planning, precisely identified project requirements, and refined its steel production processes. The winning bid featured a comprehensive "Chinese solution" covering everything from design and manufacturing to storage, transportation, port handling, and overseas shipping. This integrated approach, combined with the company's strong reputation, product quality, and efficient supply chain management, helped it outcompete five rivals from Spain, Italy, and other European countries. This project represents China's first large-scale production and export of this specific type of high-speed rail steel. Production and development work is already underway, with full delivery scheduled for completion by 2026 to meet construction timelines.
The Kenitra-Marrakech line is set to open by late 2029 and will dramatically reduce travel times across Morocco. The journey from Tangier to Casablanca will be cut to just 1 hour and 40 minutes, while passengers traveling from Rabat to Casablanca Airport will enjoy a direct 35-minute connection. These improvements are expected to boost economic development and strengthen connectivity between major cities.
