Tanzania's JP Magufuli Bridge, Africa's longest low-pylon cable-stayed bridge constructed by CRCC, officially opened to traffic on June 19, providing a significant boost to transportation, economic growth, and quality of life across Tanzania and the wider East African region.
Spanning 4.66 kilometers with four lanes in each direction and a design speed of 120 km/h, the bridge features a 520-meter main span supported by three towers in a double-cable configuration. The architectural design pays tribute to Tanzania's national identity, incorporating the green, blue, and gold colors of the country's flag while creating a distinctive "gateway" silhouette that symbolizes Tanzania's commitment to regional cooperation and prosperity.
As a flagship national infrastructure project, the bridge transforms regional connectivity by reducing what was previously a 2-hour journey around Lake Victoria to just 5 minutes. This dramatic improvement in accessibility will revolutionize the Lake Victoria region's transportation network, streamline freight logistics, and stimulate growth in agriculture, tourism, and trade while accelerating natural resource development. The infrastructure serves over one million residents along the corridor, representing a transformative step toward Tanzania's national integration and regional economic advancement.
Construction teams overcame significant challenges including complex geology, fluctuating water conditions, and constraints on equipment, materials, and personnel while incorporating cutting-edge digital construction methods and environmental protection measures. It marked the first use in Africa of a self-developed flexible waterstop technology, enabling “zero underwater concrete pouring” for pile cap construction — minimizing the ecological impact on Lake Victoria. The project generated over 2,000 local jobs with 95% local workforce participation and provided hands-on training opportunities for university students, earning widespread acclaim from both government officials and communities.
The Magufuli Bridge represents more than a transportation milestone for Tanzania—it exemplifies the practical outcomes of China-Tanzania cooperation under the Belt and Road Initiative, particularly in infrastructure development. This landmark connectivity and quality-of-life project will continue strengthening economic ties, cultural exchange, and mutually beneficial partnerships between the two nations.
