The Jinan Jiluo Road North Extension Yellow River Tunnel, designed and built by CRCC, officially opened on August 10. The new tunnel reduces travel time between Jinan's sub-center and main urban area to approximately 10 minutes, providing a vital new transportation link across the Yellow River's northern bank.
Stretching 4,328 meters in length, this tunnel serves as a major extension of the acclaimed Jinan Yellow River Tunnel Project, known as "China's First Yellow River Tunnel." The construction team worked with several universities to develop cutting-edge technology, including underwater settlement monitoring systems that detect millimeter-level changes on the reservoir floor in real time. An emergency response system ensured zero-pollution, zero-emission, and zero-leakage construction standards. The project generated a comprehensive technical framework for major reservoir crossings, resulting in 10 research publications and 11 patent applications.
To overcome complex underwater construction challenges, engineers redeployed the "Yellow River" and "Taishan" shield boring machines—massive 15.76-meter-diameter tunneling machines that had previously succeeded in crossing the Yellow River. These machines received targeted upgrades to better handle the silty clay conditions typical of the Yellow River region, boosting construction efficiency by 20%. The tunnel comprises 2,066 giant concrete segment rings, manufactured using an advanced 5.0-generation production line that incorporates over 20 technological innovations and intelligent robotics, enhancing both efficiency and cost-effectiveness.
Beyond technical achievements, the tunnel features distinctive aesthetic elements. The entrances showcase "Southern Mountains and Northern Waters" design themes, while a spectacular 300-meter "starry sky ceiling" adorns the central section. Flowing lights against a blue dome create a galaxy-like atmosphere, transforming the tunnel into a scenic attraction for drivers.
This infrastructure project directly supports China's national strategy for ecological protection and high-quality development in the Yellow River basin. The tunnel will enhance transportation connectivity across the river and facilitate urban expansion in the region.
